Theft               is               another               charge               that               is               very               complicated               and               can               have               a               long               range               of               meaning.

In               the               state               of               New               York,               there               is               a               Unified               Court               System               that               provides               community               dispute               resolution               centers               (CDRC).

The               courts               refer               many               cases               each               year               to               these               centers               for               mediation.

New               York               divorce               mediators,               like               other               types               of               mediators               in               this               state,               must               have               a               certain               amount               of               training.

These               centers               also               provide               some               New               York               mediation               training.

Contact               them               individually               to               find               out               more               about               the               process               of               getting               accepted               for               training               purposes.
The               rules               for               getting               into               mediation               differ               from               county               to               county               or               type               of               mediation.

But               the               process               is               similar               in               most               cases.

There               is               an               initial               period               of               mediation               training,               advanced               training               (this               might               be               with               the               CDRC),               and               then               an               apprenticeship               with               an               existing               CDRC               New               York               divorce               or               other               mediator.

For               example,               a               total               of               42               hours               of               training               is               required               to               work               as               a               mediator               for               issues               of               child               custody,               visitation,               and               support.
Mediators               typically               have               a               law               degree               and               some               work               in               litigation.

Although               that               is               not               required,               it               is               always               helpful               in               getting               your               foot               in               the               door.

Still               other               mediators               may               have               an               advanced               degree               in               social               work               and               some               experience               counseling               families               and               children.

In               that               case,               parties               still               sometimes               go               to               a               local               mediator               to               try               to               settle               their               divorce               cases.

There               are               many               private               mediation               firms               in               the               state               where               you               may               get               employed               as               a               mediation               expert.
To               improve               your               chances               of               getting               work               as               a               mediator,               try               to               folllow               the               same               path.

Getting               a               law               degree               is               beneficial,               and               getting               an               LLM               in               mediation               or               alternative               dispute               resolution               would               be               great               from               an               educational               standpoint.

As               stated               above,               an               advanced               degree               in               social               work               is               another               possible               route               to               getting               work               in               divorce               mediation               in               New               York.

You               should               also               take               the               same               mediation               training               course               required               of               neutrals               who               work               with               the               community               dispute               resolution               centers.

In               fact,               just               getting               on               the               roster               of               mediators               for               one               of               these               centers               first               will               improve               your               chances               of               work               as               a               New               York               divorce               mediator               with               a               private               firm.

Lawyers               and               law               firms               are               rated               according               to               peer               review,               and               this               is               one               great               way               to               determine               whether               or               not               you               should               hire               a               particular               lawyer               or               law               firm.

The               rating               system               employed               by               Martindale-Hubbell               is               the               perfect               place               to               start.

They               rate               lawyers               in               the               United               States               and               Canada               using               a               system               based               on               peer               review.

Martindale-Hubbel               collects               confidential               information               from               members               of               the               Bar               and               the               Judiciary               to               compile               a               comprehensive               rating               for               each               individual               lawyer               and               law               firm.

Although               not               all               lawyers               and               law               firms               have               been               rated,               it               is               extensive               enough               that               you               should               be               able               to               find               a               highly-rated               lawyer               or               law               firm               in               your               area.
It               is               easy               to               trust               the               Martindale-Hubbell               ratings               for               several               reasons.

For               one               thing,               all               reviews               are               confidential,               which               allows               lawyers               and               members               of               the               Judiciary               to               give               impartial               evaluations               of               their               colleagues.

Secondly,               it               is               safe               to               say               that               most               lawyers               and               law               firms               are               well-known               in               their               geographical               area.

It               is               almost               impossible               not               to               run               into               colleagues               at               functions               and               in               court.

This               ensures               that               all               lawyers               and               law               firms               are               given               the               most               fair               rating               possible.
Ratings               are               given               at               five-year               intervals               after               a               lawyer               has               been               given               admission               to               the               Bar.

Law               firms               are               rated               based               on               the               evaluation               of               their               most               highly-rated               partner,               and               representatives               investigate               each               rating               after               they               have               received               their               reviews.
In               order               for               a               lawyer               or               law               firm               to               be               given               a               rating               by               Martindale-Hubbel,               they               must               have               achieved               a               "V"               classification,               which               stands               for               Very               High.

There               are               three               different               ratings               under               the               "V"               classification:
                   Rating               Classification:               CV
A               CV               rating               indicates               that               the               lawyer               or               law               firm               has               maintained               a               high               code               of               ethics               and               is               well-received               by               his               or               her               peers.
                   Rating               Classification:               BV
This               indicates               that               the               lawyer               or               law               firm               has               been               in               practice               for               at               least               ten               years,               and               is               commended               by               his               or               her               peers.

It               is               also               indicative               of               a               large               client               base.
                   Rating               Classification:               AV
This               is               the               highest               rating               that               a               lawyer               or               law               firm               can               receive,               and               indicates               a               high               level               of               integrity               as               well               as               a               satisfied               client               base.
When               looking               for               a               lawyer               or               law               firm,               check               the               Martindale-Hubbell               ratings               to               see               which               lawyers               or               firms               in               your               area               have               achieved               a               "V"               rating.

Just               because               a               lawyer               has               not               been               rated               does               not               mean               that               he               or               she               isn't               competent,               but               sometimes               it's               better               to               look               for               lawyers               who               have               been               recognized               for               integrity               and               ability.
