We've               all               heard               stories               about               unscrupulous               lawyers,               so               how               do               we               know               who               to               choose               when               we               require               representation?

Lawyers               and               law               firms               are               rated               according               to               peer               review,               and               this               is               one               great               way               to               determine               whether               or               not               you               should               hire               a               particular               lawyer               or               law               firm.

The               rating               system               employed               by               Martindale-Hubbell               is               the               perfect               place               to               start.

They               rate               lawyers               in               the               United               States               and               Canada               using               a               system               based               on               peer               review.

Martindale-Hubbel               collects               confidential               information               from               members               of               the               Bar               and               the               Judiciary               to               compile               a               comprehensive               rating               for               each               individual               lawyer               and               law               firm.

Although               not               all               lawyers               and               law               firms               have               been               rated,               it               is               extensive               enough               that               you               should               be               able               to               find               a               highly-rated               lawyer               or               law               firm               in               your               area.
It               is               easy               to               trust               the               Martindale-Hubbell               ratings               for               several               reasons.

For               one               thing,               all               reviews               are               confidential,               which               allows               lawyers               and               members               of               the               Judiciary               to               give               impartial               evaluations               of               their               colleagues.

Secondly,               it               is               safe               to               say               that               most               lawyers               and               law               firms               are               well-known               in               their               geographical               area.

It               is               almost               impossible               not               to               run               into               colleagues               at               functions               and               in               court.

This               ensures               that               all               lawyers               and               law               firms               are               given               the               most               fair               rating               possible.
Ratings               are               given               at               five-year               intervals               after               a               lawyer               has               been               given               admission               to               the               Bar.

Law               firms               are               rated               based               on               the               evaluation               of               their               most               highly-rated               partner,               and               representatives               investigate               each               rating               after               they               have               received               their               reviews.
In               order               for               a               lawyer               or               law               firm               to               be               given               a               rating               by               Martindale-Hubbel,               they               must               have               achieved               a               "V"               classification,               which               stands               for               Very               High.

There               are               three               different               ratings               under               the               "V"               classification:
               Rating               Classification:               CV
A               CV               rating               indicates               that               the               lawyer               or               law               firm               has               maintained               a               high               code               of               ethics               and               is               well-received               by               his               or               her               peers.
               Rating               Classification:               BV
This               indicates               that               the               lawyer               or               law               firm               has               been               in               practice               for               at               least               ten               years,               and               is               commended               by               his               or               her               peers.

It               is               also               indicative               of               a               large               client               base.
               Rating               Classification:               AV
This               is               the               highest               rating               that               a               lawyer               or               law               firm               can               receive,               and               indicates               a               high               level               of               integrity               as               well               as               a               satisfied               client               base.
When               looking               for               a               lawyer               or               law               firm,               check               the               Martindale-Hubbell               ratings               to               see               which               lawyers               or               firms               in               your               area               have               achieved               a               "V"               rating.

Just               because               a               lawyer               has               not               been               rated               does               not               mean               that               he               or               she               isn't               competent,               but               sometimes               it's               better               to               look               for               lawyers               who               have               been               recognized               for               integrity               and               ability.
