Joseph Stembridge's blog ::FIRED CHILD MOLESTING NYC LAWYER SUES CRAVATH FIRM FOR UNPAID ‘BONUS’ AND ‘EMOTIONAL DISTRESS’

I               love               the               academic               world.

I               love               books               and               I               love               classrooms,               the               chalk               dust               and               the               bulletin               boards.

So               when               it               was               suggested               by               my               sister-in-law               that               I               take               the               school               secretaries               exam,               I               was               somewhat               eager               to               try.

That               was               twenty-seven               years               ago               and               I               have               been               working               as               a               school               secretary               since               that               time.

The               fact               that               I               would               be               paid               for               a               long               summer               vacation,               a               spring               break               and               Christmas               vacation               were               all               factors               that               were               very               appealing               to               me               especially               since               I               was               a               single               parent               of               a               school               age               child               at               that               time.

It               was               a               decent               enough               job               for               me               but               the               money               was               never               enough.

My               friends               were               working               for               law               firms,               IBM               and               big               hospitals               and               they               were               moving               ahead               in               their               careers               and               making               a               lot               more               money               that               I               would               ever               make.

They               urged               me               to               apply               for               a               better               paying               job               and               specifically               to               try               IBM.

I               stayed               with               the               Board               of               Education               and               enjoyed               the               ups               and               down               of               working               in               a               school               with               inner               city               teenagers.

Many               years               later,               a               friend               called               me               to               let               me               know               that               she               had               been               excessed               by               IBM               and               was               looking               for               a               job               and               was               interested               in               working               for               the               Board               of               Education.
I               realize               now,               in               looking               back               at               the               whole               experience,               that               it's               been               a               good               ride.

I               have               had               many               laughs,               many               moments               of               joy,               some               frustration,               anger               and               some               sorrow.
In               September               and               October,               hearing               the               Beginning               Band               as               I               pass               the               music               rooms               can               be               painful               on               the               ears.

In               April               and               May,               as               they               practice               for               the               end               of               year               concert,               the               same               band               sounds               almost               professional.
Teenagers               tend               to               answer               to               the               point.

On               a               form               to               be               filled               out               after               an               accident,               one               student               answered               to               "Name               of               Injured",               My               left               knee.

A               witness               statement               written               by               a               student               who               had               been               in               the               vicinity               where               a               fight               occurred               simply               said               "I               didn't               see               nothing."
               Language               barriers               are               often               comical.

I               asked               a               student               recently,               "Where               do               you               come               from?"               He               answered,               "I'm               going               to               Mexico."               When               I               asked               the               adult               accompanying               him,               "Are               you               his               mother?"               she               replied,               "No,               I'm               his               uncle."               When               I               asked               a               student               once               where               he               got               his               pen               that               was               curved               and               twisted,               he               said               his               gynecologist               gave               it               to               him.
There               have               also               been               sad               and               tragic               days.

A               student               came               into               the               office               one               day               screaming,               "I'm               going               to               die."               His               scalp               was               cut               from               his               left               ear               over               to               his               right               ear.

Another               student               had               used               a               razor               to               do               the               ghastly               deed.

Many               teenagers               become               depressed               and               attempt               suicide.

Teenagers               get               killed               in               car               accidents,               hit               and               runs,               and               sometimes               they               are               innocent               victims               of               shootings.
               I               love               the               kids.

I               now               work               in               a               large               high               school               and               I               am               the               intake/admissions               secretary.

Many               of               the               new               students               are               also               new               in               the               United               States.

They               have               left               their               countries               and               sometimes               their               families               and               as               someone               who               was               once               in               those               shoes,               I               empathize.

I               try               to               be               gentle               and               comforting               with               them.

I               have               taken               possession               of               them.

They               are               my               kids               and               I               expect               other               staff               members               will               treat               them               gently               as               well.
